Mission House

Mission House is a group of young adults who come together to give a year of their life in service to Christ by making themselves available and being stewards of the neighborhood where we reside.  We come together with the desire not only to be disciples but to create disciples.

To do this, Mission House interns partner with existing service organizations that closely deal with injustice, poverty, education, and faith as well as offer opportunities within the walls of the house and various places throughout the community to create relationships, be neighbors, serve others and to love like Jesus has instructed.  Mission House is a community of people who have dedicated themselves for one year to teach, invest, grow and be used for God’s service in our community.  They will mobilize God’s church outside the confines of four walls and take it into neighborhoods.

Summer is here…

There is something that is beautiful about the way that people in our neighborhood respond to the weather.  The demean of our community for the most part is a direct reflection of the patterns of the weather.  If the skies are cold and gloomy chances are those emotions will be reflected in the attitude of the demonic presence on our block.  On the other hand when it is sunny and beautiful so is our community.  Now I realize that this is a rash generalization but for the purpose of conversation we are going to use the idea that the weather directly affects the atmosphere of people lives.

There is just something I love about living in a cross-cultural context.  The smells, the smiles…the frowns, the colors, the languages, but most of all the fact that people are outside and involved in each others lives.  Unabated true community.  The sunshine truly reflects light into the lives of our community.  There may be no deep investment in one another but there is interaction.  Interaction is breathtakingly refreshing.  It is so true that people desire to be a part of something that is bigger than themselves and living cross-culturally I get to see first hand this played out on a fundamental level.  Each day I witness the (most of the time unwillingly and unknowing) attempt at assimilation and inclusion.  This practice of being included brings folks who don’t look alike, speak the same, or even believe in the same things to one anothers front porches, back yards, and shade trees.

I feel so blessed to live in an area that is not dominated by one race, ethnicity, or religion but in a place that truly transcends culture.  Now if I could just transplant this community into a place with no winter…

Update from Bhutan…wait KCK

Well we have made it through week one with our first class of interns. It has been a fun 8 days. Yesterday the boys got their first taste of “contact” work spending time in the home of a Bhutanese family in our neighborhood. A family that they will be serving while they volunteer at Mission Adelante. The guys got to experience the overflowing love and hospitality of the Bhutanese people and as a product of that experienced their first cup of Nepali Chai. It is a tea that is full of ginger and sugar. I wish you could have seen the MH guys’ faces, they were so joyful. Sitting in the home of people from another culture where only one person in the family knows English can be very overwhelming and very awkward, but the guys were feeding on it, you could sense that God is on the brink of something huge in that community and our interns Mike and Drew get to see everything first hand. God is good.

PS Does anyone want to sponsor a month of curriculum books for mission house? Each month runs about $100. Thanks. we appreciate your support.
